Washington, D.C. - Small business advocate Karen Kerrigan said that America's small business sector will be a big winner when George W. Bush officially brings his optimistic spirit of bipartisan collaboration to Washington when he is sworn in as 43rd president next month. Ms. Kerrigan, Chairman of the 60,000-member Small Business Survival Committee (SBSC), a leading small business watchdog and advocacy group, issued the following statement in response to George W's Bush presidential victory:
"There is nothing more important to the overall health and growth of our economy than America's small business and entrepreneurial sector. George W. Bush's ardent support of education reform that works for every child, an affordable and competitive health care system, common-sense tax relief and modernizing and strengthening Social Security to help avoid future financial calamity when the worker-to-beneficiary ratio diminishes substantially, not only appeals to small business voters but to a diversified base of Americans nationwide.
The Bush agenda is one that both Democrats and Republicans have supported through proposed legislation in the Congress, which means the president-elect has an opportunity to forward a range of initiatives. Upon review of that agenda, there are numerous measures that are supported on a bipartisan basis, including: death tax repeal, marriage penalty relief, IRA expansion coupled with small business pension reform, community renewal, MSA expansion along with a host of other reforms to make health care more affordable and accessible, regulatory accountability and legislation to help increase the abundance of capital for small firms, as well as other reforms.
Proposals at the heart of Mr. Bush's economic agenda have been advocated by the small business community for years. Mr. Bush's appreciation for entrepreneurship means issues that are critical to the success and survival of small business will be looked upon kindly within the oval office.
If his accomplishments in the state of Texas are a guide to his commitment to small business in the White House, current and future entrepreneurs have much to look forward to in a Bush presidency. Texas was consistently ranked as one of the top 5 states to do business as a small firm in SBSC's Annual Small Business Survival Index (
http://www.sbsc.org/). I look forward to working with Mr. Bush on moving forward with our commonly held small business agenda."
