Washington, D.C. - One of the nation's leading small business advocacy organizations gave its "small business seal of approval" to president-elect George W. Bush's cabinet nominees.
"Quite simply, it is an extraordinary team," stated Karen Kerrigan, Chairman of the Small Business Survival Committee (SBSC), a national advocacy organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
"The breadth of experience of each individual, matched by their diverse yet principled views will ultimately help to construct policy that is fair and objective. From the perspective of the entrepreneur, we are very pleased that nominees reveal a sensitivity to the impact that government can have on business - particularly small firms," Kerrigan added.
In regards to what some special interests have defined as "controversial" nominees, SBSC Chief Economist Raymond Keating provided his small business insight into president-elect Bush's picks for Department of Labor Secretary and U.S. Attorney General. On the nomination of John Ashcroft, Keating remarked, "After eight years of antitrust activism, I would expect a far more restrained antitrust division at the U.S. Department of Justice under an Attorney General John Ashcroft. This would be a positive economic development for businesses and consumers alike. Mr. Ashcroft has also been a great friend of small businesses and their workforce in general."
After studying the Department of Labor from a small business perspective for close to seven years Keating observed, "Linda Chavez has exhibited great respect for the workings of the free market, and great skepticism of increased government intervention and regulation in the marketplace. From a small business perspective, this promises a refreshing change at the Department of Labor."
SBSC believes that the U.S. Senate, and the American public, will look at these two nominations more fairly than the special interest opposing them, using broader and more objective information than the out-of-context snapshots currently being used.
"The slicing-and-dicing-of-quotes-ploy is just plain thoughtless. It just proves that certain groups only feel they can gain politically if they make reckless accusations. That being said, I am confident that George W. Bush's optimistic and thoughtful leadership will transcend the callous language and atmosphere that is currently being fermented among the few," added Kerrigan.
