Statement of Karen Kerrigan
Chairman: Small Business Survival Committee
Supporting the Introduction of
The National Energy Security Act of 2001
At Capitol Hill Press Briefing
February 26, 2001

Thank you Senator Murkowski. On behalf of the Small Business Survival Committee and our 70,000-members nationwide I am pleased to voice our support for this very important initiative. Let me thank you for your leadership in thoughtfully pressing forward on a key issue of growing concern and critical importance for our nation`s small business owners.

Affordable energy is particularly important to small firms. For many, the cost of energy is not only the difference between profits and losses, but also their survival and durability in a competitive marketplace, as well as their ability to maintain a healthy level of job creation and innovation, which is so essential to our entire economy.
The National Energy Security Act of 2001 takes a comprehensive and common sense approach in balancing our energy requirements with equally important goals of providing a clean, secure and affordable energy supply for our nation`s consumers and in our case - small businesses and entrepreneurs. We are encouraged and pleased about measures to review regulatory barriers to emerging technology - small firms are the well-spring of innovations and new cutting edge technologies - this is very important for investment and bringing energy-efficient technologies faster to market.

This legislation, by increasing access to critical energy supplies and
improving the infrastructure to move those supplies to consumers, will make
for more reliable and affordable energy supply, which is essential to small business`s economic well-being.

Again Senator Murkowski, thank you for your leadership.  We look forward to working with you and your colleagues to help move this important effort forward.
