WARNING: SENATE BUDGET COMMITTEE SETTING THE STAGE FOR ROLLING BACK TAX RELIEF
July 12, 2001
Washington, D.C. - The Small Business Survival Committee, a leading small business advocacy group is warning Americans that Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-ND), appears to be holding a series of budget hearings with an agenda of rolling back newly enacted tax relief for American small businesses, their families and employees.

"Less than two weeks after withholding tax rates were lowered, Chairman Conrad seems to be setting the stage to confiscate the much-need tax relief Americans are just now receiving," warned SBSC president Darrell McKigney. "This should outrage all American taxpayers.  After all, the tax relief Americans are receiving is only a fraction of the surplus to start with.  Given the size of the surplus and slow economic conditions, the Senate should be acting increase the amount of tax relief and make it more immediate.  But Chairman Conrad appears to have turned the tables against small businesses and taxpayers."

" Of course, Chairman Conrad and his liberal allies in the Senate voted against the tax relief package in the first place , so it's not surprising that he and his fellow big spenders in the Senate worry won't they won't have enough of the taxpayers' money to spend, spend, spend."

McKigney said there is some irony in Chairman Conrad's newfound concern about a balanced budget and paying down the debt, given he voted against the Balanced Budget Amendment.

"The real budget issue here is which budget is most important to the country and the economy:  is it a growing federal government budget, or a growing budget for small businesses, their customers, and their employees," said McKigney.

"Congress and President Bush did the right thing by providing tax relief at a time when taxpayers and the economy need it the most. The majority of the U.S. Congress agreed as evidenced by the vote in favor of the package.  I only wish Chairman Conrad would spend the Committee's time on productive ways to make the economy stronger by returning more of the hard-earned tax dollars of small business owners and their workforce back to them in a bigger and more immediate way instead of trying to go backwards on tax relief," McKigney concluded.
