Trends In Marketplace, Are Laying Groundwork For Congress To Make Msas Available To All Americans
July 11, 2002
MSAs CONTROL HEALTH CARE COSTS
MSAs INSURE THE UNINSURED
MSAs PROVIDE MAXIMUM PATIENT CHOICE AND CONTROL
MSAs HAVE BIPARTISAN SUPPORT
WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Coalition for Patient Choice Chairman Karen Kerrigan today observed that recent developments in health care financing are an indication that Congress should strive to make Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs) available to all Americans this year.
"More and more insurance companies, of all sizes, are offering MSAs to their customers - many of whom are seeking them as a flexible, cost-controlling measure. Congress should follow this strong signal and immediately make MSAs available to all Americans. It's good policy and good politics," Kerrigan said.
"Health Insurance premiums are on the rise, especially for sole proprietors and business owners with just a few employees. Does that mean it's time to sacrifice quality coverage for lower costs?...The best health-insurance tax break for some business owners may be an Archer Medical Savings Account (MSA)" - Judy Artunian, Chicago Tribune 4/23/02
"After getting a 40% premium increase two years ago, the owners of Camp Shamineau, a year-round Bible camp in Motley, Minn., tried something new. They switched their nearly two dozen workers to a medical savings account plan. The savings? About 30,000 a year. ...It's working well for us, [camp financial administrator Jessie] Raustadt says. 'the premiums are lower, and the employees are happy'" -- Julie Appleby, USA Today 8/27/01
