The ADA Rollercoaster
February 3, 2000

Golfer Casey Martin used the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to force the PGA Tour to change the rules of golf for him so he could ride in a golf cart during tournaments.  The issue, though, is still in the courts.

Now it's the amusement parks turn to be an ADA target.  According to a recent MSNBC report, a federal ADA rule is being considered for amusement rides.  The industry notes that they already do a lot to help disabled guests, and that new federal rules could compromise safety; be incompatible with certain rides; and unfairly place big costs on manufacturers.

The ADA is another example of federal regulation that might sound nice, but turns out to be twisted beyond its original intent and inflicts considerable costs on business owners, their employees and consumers.

What's the next target?
